A mother from Harpenden has delivered a petition signed by thousands of people to Downing Street, in a bid to pressure the government into signing a charter to end extreme hunger around the world.

Along with other representatives from Save the Children Ruth Dawkins presented the 18,000 signature strong petition to the government, on the same day that a report outlining the dangers of a slow response to food crisis can have on lives was published.

She said: “Bringing up my son has made me realise how important it is that children across the world have the same opportunities that he will have - no child should need to go without food, water or basic medicines.”

Mrs Dawkins has always had a strong interest in politics and activism and was previously a parliamentary candidate for the Scottish Green Party.

She said: “It is very exciting.

“The campaign brought people from all over the county together – it didn’t matter where you were from.

“It makes people realise this is an issue that a lot of people care about not just the traditional campaigns.”
