Sandridge School in St Albans Under Pressure to put on Queen show We Will Rock You
2:50pm Friday 10th February 2012
Staff, pupils and even parents at a St Albans primary school will show off their rock and roll credentials when they stage a performance of a hit Queen musical next month.
Music teachers at Sandridge School, in Woodcock Hill, are hoping the collaborative show will be a successful first in the school’s performing history.
Headteacher Cindy Impey has committed to two evening performances of We Will Rock You in March, leaving teachers and pupils under pressure to fit rehearsals around their already busy curriculum.
She said: “We want to put it together through sheer inspiration and enjoyment. Everywhere you go in the school at the moment there is someone singing one of the songs – it is really bringing everyone together.”
Pupils have already begun learning their parts but during half term next week it will be the parents’ turn at a rehearsal at the school on Friday.
Mrs Impey said: “It is a bit daunting. I don’t know how it is going to go but I know it is going to be fun.
“We have music teachers here that are full of passion and already, with very few rehearsals, the children really want to do it.”
The show will be put on during the evenings of March 14 and 15 and Mrs Impey, who took over as headteacher in September, is confident the school will be ready.
All pupils, aged between four and 11, will be involved, with the older children taking charge of the performing and acting elements.
Mrs Impey hopes parents in the audience will be able to join in singing along after the half-term rehearsals.
She added: “We’re having so much fun doing this. I don’t play an instrument but I’m passionate about music and it is important to show the children that this is a lifelong enjoyment that they can get involved in.”
